The Vaucluse is overflowing with sites and monuments designated on the UNESCO World Heritage List as being of special cultural or physical significance. Its rich architectural heritage bears witness particularly to the influence of the Romans and the Papal court. The Ancient Roman Theatre of Orange, is the best preserved in Europe, and Roman remains at Vaison-la-Romaine constitute the biggest archaeological site in France.
When in 1309 Pope Clement V moved to Avignon it was set to become the capital of Christendom. Palaces, churches, frescoes and decorations flourished throughout the Vaucluse, and vineyards were established. The Roman and Papal influences are everywhere to be seen in the landscape.
